In early 2020, a California law went into effect classifying most freelancer workers and independent contractors as employees. The law was clearly aimed at Uber and Lyft, trying to force those companys to pay its drivers benefits and payroll taxes.

In an ironic twist, Vox media celebrated the win for workers, pandering to its left-leaning audience. It then turned around and fired 200 of its California freelance writers so that they wouldn’t have to pay the benefits. Bullseye!

By September of 2020, California realized it had gone overboard and the state exempted a bunch of gig-workers from the new law. However Uber and Lyft drivers were not given an exception.

But a ballot question during the November 3, 2020 California general election asked voters if these gig-economy workers and other delivery drivers should be allowed to work as contractors, free to set their own hours and schedule.

The answer from California citizens was a landslide “Yes” by almost 3 million votes.
